Your Parliamentary Candidate for Selby (2024)

Angela Oldershaw

Angela Oldershaw

I am a former geography teacher with a degree in agriculture and have worked in Yorkshire for nearly 30 years. I now live in Allerton Bywater in the west of the district. I am a family carer, actively volunteering to improve the environment for the collective well-being of my community.

I am committed to the compassionate and ethical ideals of the Green Party and have no companies, shares or business donors to answer to.

"I have a reputation as someone who listens, represents residents and takes action. Together we can make the Selby district a healthy place in which we can not only survive, but thrive!“

In the past year I have successfully campaigned against damaging planning decisions, worked with local authorities to instigate new tree planting, engaged in restorative street art projects and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Canal & Rivers Trust projects in the area. In addition to supporting and organising such initiatives through petitions and representation, I am not afraid to get my hands dirty in order to stand up for people's concerns in the community.

My local priorities include:

Years of underfunding and the gradual privatisation of our once world-leading National Health Service means fewer trained staff, longer waiting times, depleted services and even, most recently, shortages of some of the prescription drugs upon which patients rely. The scarcity of NHS doctors and dwindling support for carers and parents are leading to real hardships for the old, young and disabled alike.

The Green Party believes that healthcare is not a commodity to be bought or sold — the National Health Service must provide healthcare, free at the point of need, funded through taxation. It must be a public service funded by, run by and accountable to local and national government and devoid of all privatisation, where the privatised administration, healthcare provision, support services or capital ownership. The NHS is concerned with healthcare provision and should not be subject to market forces either internal or external.

Local pride and community spirit are evident in our region in the many sporting, creative and environmental groups active in the district. If elected, in addition to working for the continued social and economic health of our region, I will very much champion our rich cultural heritage. By supporting such programmes as music in Selby Town Hall, and groups such as the Sherburn and Villages Community Trust, the Kippax Food Pantry and the many Womble and Strider teams, I will strive to make our area a clean, green and cooperative district. I am keen to listen to and work with all members of the community and to help provide reliable public transport, great local services and support for all ages.

I will also support local communities in scrutinising and opposing developments which are detrimental to the local area and fight for the maximum level of restoration or mitigation where such developments are already being allowed to take place.

Protecting the environment has to be a top priority. Our local rivers, woods, towns and farmland are choking under a sea of waste in the form of litter, plastics and, more and more commonly, untreated sewage entering the ecosystem. Hedgerows have become latrines, parks strewn with food and drink packaging, and drains regularly clogged with wipes.

The Green Party believes that pollution must be stopped at source. We will require industries to systematically audit and publish their use of toxic chemicals and to establish binding timetables to reduce such use. We will guarantee the public's right to know about chemical uses and emissions, the health and environmental impacts of pollution from these sources, and actively promote environmental education.
